A first cycle degree classified with a Second Class (Honours) or Category II or better in one of the following areas of study: (Computational) Linguistics, Language Technology, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, or other relevant disciplines.

Applicants are required to demonstrate that their standard of English is satisfactory. The offer of a place on the Course may be made subject to the applicants obtaining such proficiency qualifications prior to the commencement of their studies.

The Master of Science in Human Language Science and Technology falls under the auspices of the Erasmus Mundus LCT (Language and Communication Technologies) consortium. The programme aims to create education and training opportunities for future generations of leaders in research and innovation in the area of Human Language Technology. It provides you with deep knowledge and insight into the various disciplines that contribute to the methods of LCT and strengthens your ability to work according to scientific methods.

Non-Maltese students spend one year at the University of Malta and another year at a partner University of the LCT consortium. Maltese students spend both years at partner universities of the LCT consortium, other than the University of Malta.

This programme is offered as an interfaculty programme of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology and the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology.

Students registered on this course are required to register for 60 ECTS credits at the University of Malta and another 60 ECTS credits at a partner institution.

This programme of study is governed by the Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Human Language Science and Technology - M.Sc. (HLST) - Degree Course Regulations, 2020 under the auspices of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology and the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology.

In addition to the total number of credits for the programme (120 ECTS credits), students may apply to the Board to register for the extra study-unit listed hereunder. Extra study-units cannot substitute compulsory, elective or optional study-units that form part of the official Senate-approved programme of studies, and do not count towards the Year Average Mark or towards the Final Weighted Average Mark. By the end of the course, you will:

  • Acquire in-depth knowledge of topics in Language Science and Technology, Computational Linguistics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Build solid foundations from the perspective of language (computational syntax and morphology, computational semantics, pragmatics and discourse) and computer science (Logic, computability and complexity, formal languages and algorithms, data structures, data organisation and processing).
  • Acquire a rounded set of skills that combine theoretical insights with practice-oriented knowledge.
  • Receive advanced applications in areas such as Machine Translation, Natural Language Generation, Knowledge Representation, Information Retrieval, Question Answering, Speech Technology, Bioinformatics Automated Reasoning, Web Science, Intelligent and Multi-modal Interfaces, Search Engine Technology, Neural Networks, and Machine Learning.

This degree serves as a qualification for follow-up PhD studies with the participating partners and other institutions or as an additional qualification for a career in the IT industry. In both cases, the degree is a guarantee of high-quality education for when you will work on multilingual information management, the development of new technologies for adaptive multimodal and multilingual human-computer dialogue systems, efficient processes for content-management on the Internet, and development of language strategy and quality assurance, especially in the rapidly expanding multilingual European area.
